Translation in Germany

How Translation Works With German Authorities

Germany has one federal legal system, but registry offices, foreigners' authorities and courts are run locally by the states and municipalities. A document that a Standesamt in Hamburg accepts can face a different checklist at an Ausländerbehörde in Munich, so we confirm what the receiving office expects before we quote.

German courts and many public offices ask for a translation certified by a sworn translator, appointed through a German court and listed in the states' shared database of court translators and interpreters. Other receivers, such as universities, employers and many US agencies, accept a certified translation with a signed certificate of accuracy. Our certified translation services cover both routes, and the receiving authority always decides which one it needs.

The flow also runs in the other direction. German birth certificates, diplomas, court rulings and company registry extracts often travel to USCIS, a US state court, a Spanish Registro Civil or an Italian Comune. We prepare those translations to the format each receiver expects, from name spellings to the layout of stamps and seals.

Business demand follows the regional economy: finance and logistics in Hesse, automotive engineering in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, chemicals and heavy industry along the Rhine and the Ruhr, and ports and shipping in Hamburg and Bremen. Our translation services cover contracts, technical manuals, financial statements and marketing content for each of these sectors in 50+ languages.

Trade fairs drive much of the interpreting work, at venues such as Messe Frankfurt, Messe München, Koelnmesse and Messe Düsseldorf. Our interpreting services also cover court hearings, registry-office weddings and medical appointments, and BeTranslated's translation agency keeps an office in Cologne alongside its headquarters in Valencia.

Translation in Germany: Frequently Asked Questions

German courts, registry offices and foreigners' authorities usually ask for a translation by a translator sworn in at a German regional court. Universities, employers and many private receivers accept a certified translation with a signed certificate of accuracy. Ask the receiving office first, or send us its instructions and we will match them.

Germany belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention, so many foreign public documents need an apostille from the competent authority of the country that issued them. Within the EU, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the apostille for many civil-status documents, such as birth and marriage certificates. The apostille is issued by that authority, never by the translator, and we translate it together with the document.

Yes. We translate German certificates, diplomas, court rulings and commercial registry extracts for USCIS, US state courts and universities, and for European receivers such as a Spanish Registro Civil, an Italian Comune or a French mairie. Each translation follows the conventions the receiving body expects.

All sixteen states, from Schleswig-Holstein to Bavaria. Translation is delivered remotely by native linguists, and interpreters travel to courts, registry offices, trade fairs and company sites anywhere in the country.

Send a clear scan or photo of every page, including stamps and the back of the document, and tell us which office will receive it. We reply with a quote and a delivery date, then deliver a signed PDF and, where the office needs it, a paper original by post.

We cover 50+ languages in both directions, including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese. Each translation goes to a native speaker of the target language with experience in the subject.
