Subtitling Services and Closed Captioning

Subtitles assume the viewer can hear the audio and translate the dialogue into another language. Captions, including SDH, transcribe the same-language audio and add non-speech sounds, speaker labels, and audio cues for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

Closed captions sit in a separate file or track, so viewers switch them on or off in the player. Open captions are burned into the video image and are always visible, which suits social feeds that autoplay without sound, trade-show screens, and players that cannot load a caption file.

We deliver either version. For open captions we render the text into the video at the size, font, and position you choose, and keep the editable caption file for later updates.

SDH stands for subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. It combines the timing of subtitles with the extra information of captions, describing sound effects, music, and who is speaking.

Netflix, for example, requires both translated subtitles and SDH-compliant captions in most territories, and delivering the wrong type fails the platform's compliance checks.

Each platform sets its own rules for characters per line, display duration, frame rate, and encoding. Netflix specifies a maximum of 42 characters per line, while broadcast delivery calls for EBU-STL files in Europe and SCC in North America. We brief the team on the target spec before production so files arrive ready to upload.

We do not provide real-time stenographic captioning for live broadcasts. For a live event, our live interpreting services cover the room, and the recording can be subtitled afterward.
