International Travel Tips: The Do's and Don'ts

International Travel Tips: The Do’s and Don’ts

Traveling abroad and moving abroad share a failure mode: you arrive with the wrong expectations and spend the first month reacting instead of enjoying it.

Most of the fix happens before you leave. The rest is a handful of habits that are easy to describe and harder to keep once you are tired, jet-lagged and trying to buy a train ticket in a language you have been studying for six weeks.

What follows is the short version. A few things worth doing, and a few worth avoiding.

Do’s

Research the Place, Not Just the Sights

Spend the weeks before your trip or your move reading about where you are going, and not only the parts a guidebook sells.

Food, clothing, working hours, how people greet each other, what counts as rude: these are the details that decide whether the first two weeks feel like an adventure or an ordeal.

Expect the start to be uncomfortable anyway. Knowing the customs in advance shortens that stretch, it does not remove it.

Plan, but Leave Room for the Unplanned

A rough itinerary helps. A rigid one turns every delay into a problem and rules out the afternoons that end up being the best part of the trip.

Make a list of what you want to see, then leave gaps in it on purpose.

Keep an Open Mind at the Table

Travel puts unfamiliar food in front of you, which is half the point of going.

Longer stays are where this gets harder. Anyone holding to a specific diet away from home knows the problem, and ready-to-eat vegan meals are one way to keep it manageable without living on whatever the nearest supermarket stocks.

Eat locally when you can, and keep something familiar in reserve for the days you cannot face another conversation about ingredients.

Keep a Translator App Handy

As a translation company, we can tell you that language is the setback people underestimate most.

A translation app such as Google Translate will get you through a menu, a pharmacy counter or a ticket machine. It will not get you through a rental contract, which is a different job and one for a person.

Sort the Paperwork Before You Need It

A holiday needs a passport. A move needs a file: birth certificate, marriage certificate, degree certificates, criminal record check, sometimes a driver's license.

Plenty of countries will only accept those documents in the local language, and many ask for a certified or sworn translation rather than any translation at all. Which of the two applies depends on the country and the office you are dealing with, so check the requirement before you pay for anything.

Start early. Gathering originals from a country you have already left is the part that catches people out, and it is far slower than the document translation that follows it.

Don’ts

A new country is unsettling for everyone, including people who travel constantly. These are the habits that make it worse.

Don’t Compare Everything to Home

Spotting the differences between where you came from and where you are now is easy, and doing it out loud all day is a fast route to closing yourself off.

You chose somewhere new. Treat it as its own place rather than a worse version of the one you left.

Don’t Travel in a Bubble

Going with friends or family is comfortable, and comfort is exactly what stops you meeting anyone.

Introduce yourself. Ask questions. It is awkward for about ninety seconds, and it is how you learn what a place is actually like from someone who lives there.

Don’t Expect to Fit In Straight Away

You are in a new city with different people, different customs and, often, a language you are still learning. That holds whether you have landed in German-speaking Europe or somewhere much further from home.

Blending in takes months, not days. Wanting it sooner is normal, getting it sooner is rare.

What to Do Instead

Relax, and let the adjustment take the time it takes.

You will adapt. Almost everyone does, and usually sooner than they expected once they stop measuring it.

Cultural Navigation

Travel tips only take you so far. The rest is paying attention, asking questions and accepting that the first few weeks will be clumsy.

Where language gets in the way of something that matters, whether that is a lease, a work permit or the copy behind a travel and tourism business, BeTranslated's translators can handle it.

For anything else, our professional translation services start with a conversation. Bon voyage.
