Spanish residency applications ask for a police certificate, legalised, and translated by a sworn translator. We handle the certificate, the legalisation route, and the translation as one job.
A residency application does not just need your police certificate. It needs that certificate legalised for use abroad, and then translated by a translator the receiving authority accepts. Each step depends on the one before it.
Get the order wrong and the file goes back. Translate before the apostille is attached and the certified set is incomplete, because the apostille carries text of its own.
We coordinate the certificate and its legalisation, then produce the sworn translation ourselves. The translation half is our own work, done by a translator authorised for the country receiving your file.
The certificate is for an application, not an end in itself. If that application is Spanish residency, the practical side of moving to Valencia is a separate problem worth solving early.
The legalisation route is not the same everywhere, because not every country is party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Getting this wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake on these files.
FBI Identity History Summary
Issued by the FBI, either directly or through an approved Channeler. Once issued it is apostilled by the US Department of State, which is the step that most often sets the timeline.
We then produce the sworn Spanish translation. This is the route most of our US clients need.
RCMP certified criminal record check
Canada joined the Apostille Convention on 11 January 2024, so Canadian documents now take an apostille rather than full consular legalisation.
If you are working from guidance written before that date, it is out of date. Anything telling you to book a consular appointment for a Canadian police certificate is describing the old route.
ACRO Police Certificate
Issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office and apostilled by the FCDO Legalisation Office. The UK has been party to the convention since 1965, so the route is well established.
We translate the certificate into Spanish for residency use.
Police Clearance Certificate
There is no such thing as a UAE apostille. The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, and it does not appear on the HCCH status table at all.
The route is attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs followed by Spanish consular legalisation. That crosses two ministries and runs on their schedule, not ours, so we quote it separately from anything else on this page. If you have already left the UAE, say so early, because obtaining the certificate from outside the country is a different and slower process.
Only the US certificate is an FBI Identity History Summary. A Canadian one is an RCMP check, a British one is an ACRO certificate, an Emirati one is a Police Clearance Certificate.
Asking the wrong issuing body for the wrong document is the fastest way to lose a fortnight.
The apostille is attached to the original and carries its own text, which forms part of the document being certified.
A translation produced before it exists cannot cover it, so the set arrives incomplete.
Police certificates are usually accepted only within a recency window measured from the issue date, and that window is set by the receiving consulate rather than by the issuing body.
Confirm the window that applies to your consulate before you start, because it is what actually drives the timing of the whole file.
Apostille and consular legalisation are different processes with different costs and different timelines.
Which one applies depends on whether the issuing country is party to the convention, and as the UAE case shows, plenty of third-party guidance online gets this wrong.
