XLIFF (XML Localization Interchange File Format) is an ISO standard designed specifically for the exchange of localizable content between authoring systems and translation tools. Every translatable string is stored as a discrete segment with a unique ID, enabling translation memory tools to match, reuse, and leverage previously translated content at the segment level.
Segments are matched against your project TM at the 100%, fuzzy, and no-match levels. Leveraged segments reduce cost and delivery time on every subsequent project.
XLIFF state attributes (needs-translation, translated, reviewed, final) are correctly set on all delivered segments. Your CMS import workflow receives the status it expects.
Segment-level QA checks including tag verification, length limits, terminology consistency, and number format validation are run before delivery.
Both the widely deployed XLIFF 1.2 format and the newer XLIFF 2.0 standard are supported natively, including XLIFF extensions used by major CMS and app platforms.

XLIFF 1.2 is the version most widely supported by current CMS platforms, translation management systems, and CAT tools. XLIFF 2.0 is the current ISO standard and introduces a modular architecture that is more extensible. BeTranslated supports both versions. XLIFF inline elements such as ph, g, x, bx, and ex tags wrap non-translatable content within segments. These are preserved exactly in the translated segment and are never translated. Our QA validation verifies that every inline tag in the source segment appears correctly in the target segment.
