The interpreter sits beside one or two listeners and renders speech in a low voice without equipment. The preferred format for VIP briefings, bilateral negotiations, and factory or site visits.
Whispered interpreting (chuchotage) is real-time interpretation delivered in a low voice into the ear of one or two listeners. No booth, no receiver, no technician, no setup time. The interpreter sits beside the listener throughout the meeting and renders the speaker's content continuously, in the same simultaneous mode as a conference booth would use, but at conversational volume and only for the few people who need it.
The interpreter is in the room without becoming part of the room. Calibrated to corporate, diplomatic, and high-net-worth settings where the speaker dynamic must not change because an interpreter is present.
Walks in with the listener and starts. Suits venues that cannot host equipment (factory floors, ministerial offices, private residences) and time windows too short to rig a booth.
Whispered is cognitively closer to simultaneous than to consecutive. Sessions over 45 minutes are staffed with two interpreters who alternate, preserving accuracy through the second half of the assignment.
NDAs signed as standard. Named interpreters retained across a transaction or visit lifecycle so the listener works with the same voice every meeting, not a fresh face per session.

One or two listeners. Beyond that, the interpreter has to raise their voice past the whisper register and starts disturbing the meeting. For three or more listeners we recommend a portable bidule kit (transmitter and receivers) so the interpreter can continue quietly while the listeners hear cleanly through earpieces.
Whispered is real-time (simultaneous mode, just unaided by a booth). Consecutive waits for the speaker to pause and then renders the passage. Whispered keeps the meeting moving at native pace; consecutive doubles the meeting time but trades that for note-based precision.
Whispered is often used to translate the proceedings for a single non-English-speaking party in court, so they can follow live without disturbing the bench. For witness examination and formal testimony, consecutive is the format the court expects.
