Interpreting Services for The Hague's International Courts and Congresses

The Hague (Den Haag) is the seat of the Dutch government and is widely known as the international city of peace and justice. It is home to the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Peace Palace, the International Criminal Court, and a branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, alongside Europol, Eurojust, and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Why The Hague demands specialists

These institutions work in set languages. The International Court of Justice has two official languages, English and French, the International Criminal Court names English and French as its working languages within six official languages, and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons uses six. Each institution arranges the interpretation inside its own hearing room or plenary hall, while the lawyers, delegations, researchers, and organizations around it often need interpreters of their own for preparation, consultations, and side meetings.

The city's ordinary justice system adds a steady local layer. The Rechtbank Den Haag sits at the Paleis van Justitie on Prins Clauslaan, and Dutch law requires courts, prosecutors, the police, and the immigration service to use sworn interpreters in criminal and immigration matters. Dutch is the anchor language, most often paired with English, French, Arabic, Russian, and Spanish.

How we cover The Hague

We provide simultaneous interpreting from booths for congresses and treaty sessions, consecutive interpreting for hearings, depositions, and negotiations, and whispered interpreting (chuchotage) and liaison interpreting for site visits and small delegations. For hybrid programs we run remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI), video remote interpreting (VRI), and telephone interpreting on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Webex.

Where a venue has no built-in cabins, we bring booths, headsets, and technicians. Interpreters work into their native language only, and our network covers 50+ languages, including the Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish used across the international organizations in the city.

For a hearing, a filing, or an immigration procedure, the supporting documents can be handled in the same booking. We arrange certified translation, a translation with a signed certificate of accuracy, and the receiving authority decides what it accepts.

The International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Criminal Court, and the Hague branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals all sit in The Hague. The courts arrange interpretation in the courtroom themselves; counsel, experts, and delegations around a case often need language support for preparation and meetings.

  • Treaty Bodies and Their Delegations

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons holds its Conference of the States Parties in The Hague every year, and the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court has met here too. Delegations arrive with their own briefings, bilateral talks, and side events, which is where separate interpreting is arranged.

  • Law Enforcement and Judicial Cooperation

Europol and Eurojust are both seated in The Hague. Eurojust lists coordination meetings and joint investigation teams among its tools, and meetings between investigators and prosecutors from several countries are a typical setting for consecutive and liaison interpreting.

  • Apostilles and Certified Translation

The Hague Conference on Private International Law has its headquarters here and is home to the 1961 Apostille Convention, and the Rechtbank Den Haag issues apostilles and legalizations at its central desk. Interpreting Services in The Hague: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you provide interpreters for the International Criminal Court or the International Court of Justice?

The courts arrange the interpretation inside their own hearing rooms under their own rules. We arrange interpreters for the work around them: preparation meetings, consultations with clients and witnesses, side events, and delegation talks.

Tell us the languages and the setting and we will confirm what we can support.

When do I need a sworn interpreter in the Netherlands?

Article 28 of the Wet beëdigde tolken en vertalers (Wbtv) requires the courts, the Public Prosecution Service, the police, the Royal Marechaussee, and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service to use sworn interpreters (beëdigd tolk) in criminal and immigration matters, with limited exceptions.

The sworn interpreter status belongs to the individual interpreter, and the authority conducting the procedure decides which interpreter it accepts.

Which languages do you cover for interpreting in The Hague?

Dutch is the anchor language, most often paired with English and French. The international organizations in the city add Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish, which are official languages at the International Criminal Court and the OPCW, and our network covers 50+ languages in total.

Can you set up booths and equipment at the World Forum?

Yes. For congresses and treaty sessions we coordinate interpreter teams, booths, headsets, and technicians with the organizer and the venue. Send us the room plan and the language list early so that we can match the equipment to the program.

How far in advance should I book an interpreter in The Hague?

Book as soon as the dates are fixed. Multi-day congresses, rare language combinations, and technical or legal subjects need time for team selection and briefing, while smaller meetings and remote sessions can often be arranged at shorter notice depending on the language pair.

Show 1 more question
Can you also translate the documents for my hearing or filing?

Yes. We arrange certified translation of supporting documents, meaning a translation with a signed certificate of accuracy, and we can pair it with the interpreting booking. The receiving court, ministry, or authority decides what it accepts, so tell us which body will read the documents.
